How the math works
Your portfolio only covers the gap between what you spend and what you earn. At a 4% withdrawal rate, every dollar of yearly income replaces $25 of portfolio, so even modest part-time work makes a big difference.
Things to plan for
- Health insurance. Some employers offer benefits to part-time staff; otherwise you’ll need marketplace coverage until 65. The full calculator estimates ACA subsidies.
- Income that stops. Build some margin in case part-time work ends earlier than planned.
- Accessing your money. If you’ll draw on retirement accounts before 59½, see how to avoid the 10% penalty.

Common questions
Is part-time income before or after tax?
Enter what you’d actually have to spend, so after tax. In semi-retirement, part-time income is often taxed lightly.
Can I combine Barista FIRE and Coast FIRE?
Yes. If your part-time income covers all of your spending, you’re effectively coasting: your portfolio can keep growing untouched until you fully retire.
